Miners ignored safety Timmins inquest told An inquest into the death of a Timmins miner was told this week that despite the fact he broke safety rules by not installing overhead rock bolts, the four tonne chuck of loose rock that fell and killed Denis Cloutier was just as likely to fall even if the miner had attempted to install those rock bolts. Michael Peter Kat, a rock mechanics expert with the Ontario Ministry of Labour was testifying this week at the inquest into the death of 38-year old Denis Cloutier who was killed in 2007 at the Goldcorp Hoyle Pond mine. Cloutier was a shift supervisor for Dumas Contracting Ltd., a contract mining company contracted to install a raise, a vertical shaft underground. Cloutier died of severe head trauma after he was struck by a massive slab of rock that fell while he and miner Remi Toupin were drilling in a raise near the 1200 metre level of the mine on October 12, 2007. It was revealed that contrary to standard procedure, neither Cloutier nor Tou ...

Mully?s Musings with Mike Mulryan Alicia Blomberg's chance to play in a second consecutive Nationals came to a halt last week when her Ottawa U club lost to Montreal in CIS regional playoffs. A win over Montreal would have sent Ottawa, along with the McGill/Carleton winner to the Nationals. You know about two years ago the U.S women's hockey team started to dominate our ladies. And after a World Championship loss to the Americans, head coach Melody Davidson said if she was the problem, then maybe Hockey Canada should look at replacing her. But Hockey Canada stuck with Melody and looked at other options of improving the team. One was some new young talent, but to me the single biggest move was to play in the boys Alberta AAA midget loop on a regular basis. And the results speak for themselves. In the run up to the Olympics this year the Canadians dominated the U.S. And they looked physically dominant in doing so. What impressed me in games I saw on TV before and during the Olympics wasn ...
