2 The Post * Thursday, June 14, 2012 Region Another amazing Camp Day! Photos by Patrick Bales and Amy Richardson A sure sign summer is just around the corner is the annual Tim Hortons Camp Day, held in early June every year. The Tim Hortons locations in our area were certainly in the spirit, as staff members and community volunteers were out to help raise money to send less fortunate children to camps around North America. Pictured clockwise, from the top left: Taryn Hagan and Jamie Eckenswiller were selling lollipops to cars in the drive-thru at the Walkerton Tim Hortons location; Ron Godke got to spin the wheel for a prize at the Hanover location, surrounded by, from left to right, Shannon Zorychta, Bill Dallner, Kathy Patterson, Dennis Arnold, and Corina Arnold; Liam Stimson and Wendy Donaldson were busy washing windows in the Hanover drive-thru line. In Durham, constable Janet Schumacher of the West Grey Police Service was the unlucky victim in the sponge throw, surrounded by Jorda ...

Arran Elderslie Mary Golem QMI Agency Whether or not Arran Elderslie should change the size of its municipal council and/or dissolve its ward system in favour of an at-large voting process for all members of council are discussions council is hoping ratepayers will consider having over the summer months. Arran Elderslie council currently consists of seven members, including a mayor, deputy mayor and five councillors, one for each of the five wards - Tara, Paisley, Chesley, Elderslie and Arran. Only the mayor and deputy mayor are voted in by the entire municipality with only ward residents voting for the councillor in their respective ward. Mayor Paul Eagleson first raised the idea with a notice of motion at council's last meeting the end of May and the issue was discussed again at a meeting in Chesley on Monday. "I'm neither for or against making any changes," said Eagleson, adding he believes council "owes it to our ratepayers to at least look at it." Any council decision to either di ...

Hanover Patrick Bales Managing Editor June is clearly the month to launch a re-vamped website. Monday at midnight, the Town of Hanover relaunched www.hanover.ca, rep lacing the former cumbersome and dated website into a very user friendly, fast and welcoming site by a staff team working closely with the contracted firms Savy Communications of Hanover and iCompass Technologies Inc. Mayor Kathi Maskell perhaps summed up the new look best: "Wow." "This is a complete remake of Hanover on the world wide web," said clerk/ chief administrative officer Mike Dunlop. Councillors were given a guided tour of the new site Monday night at committeof-the-whole. Behind the redesign is Savy Communications, a company owned and operated by Hanover native Savanna Schaus. Schaus told councillors she is very pleased with the final product. "This is unlike any rural community website out there; it's more in line with an urban website," Schaus said. "We've taken best practices and made it ours." Overall, the w ...

Bittersweet farewell Well here it is, the end of the semester. Summer is well on it's way, the sun is shining, and fewer layers are required to stay warm. For every teenager out there, these days are just dragging on, exams are right around the corner and beyond that: freedom. As a grade 12, this semester has really been a big eye opener: a peek into the workplace and a taste of my future career. The ups, the downs, and everything in between has caused me to come into the paper every day with a big smile on my face and love everything I'm writing about. I could Well, it's that time of year: parents are planning holidays, elementary school children are looking forward to the year end barbecue and high school students are preparing for final exams as summer begins to make way. For me, I am wrapping up my placement as my time as a co-op student has come to an end. It has been an interesting journey since I first joined the team in February. I learned what it is really like to be a journal ...

8 The Post * Thursday, June 14, 2012 Letters to the Editor from Page 6 The implications for marking buried nuclear waste are not simple ones (Russell Hoban explored them in his 1980 novel Riddley Walker). Even now it is possible to imagine the importance of such marking. Fracking was only invented in 1947; since the 90s; it is being used extensively to crack open solid rock to squeeze out natural gas. Could a new technology inadvertently contaminate ground water by disturbing a nuclear waste burial site? The DGR has plans for creat- ing monitoring wells to detect any contamination but it is not clear what would happen if any contamination occurs. "Actions to be taken, if any, would be proposed and reviewed with the regulator." Once again the problem is to be solved in the future. Dealing with the future is always difficult, but one should not plan current projects based on the expectation that inherent problems will be solved sometime later. Alexander Ramsay Walkerton REGISTRATION SUMM ...

Hanover Letters to the Editor Board needs to spend money on students Editor: Why I am writing these letters. On the cover of the Directors Annual Report 2011 it states: In our public education system we value Accountability. Under the "Each Individual" column - Acts Responsibily, Sets Priorities and Works Effectively are printed. In my opinion this isn't happening and the students are paying the price. This is about a school board who allots a Nutrition teacher, with 22 students, $6-8 per class (not per student) for food preparation while at board meetings hot meals are being served by catering services. This is about a school board who changes the plans and builds a larger school when their charts show enrollment has been decling and the projection is, this will continue. In the Directors Report 2011, the Capacity Utilization Chart states that 64.2% of our schools are using less than 80% of the available space. To adjust the cost for this large school the money for playground equipmen ...

10 The Post * Thursday, June 14, 2012 Bluewater Staff cuts at Bluewater school board Mary Golem QMI Agency Sixteen people at the Bluewater District School Board's education centre in Chesley are losing their jobs. The staff cuts are needed in order for the board to balance its $198,849,123 budget for the 2012- 13 school year. Trustees approved the next school year's budget with almost no public discussion before the vote at a special board meeting last Tuesday in Chesley. Only West Grey-Hanover trustee John Chapman voted against the budget, but later he would not say why he opposed it. The board will spend $368,845 more next year than the $198,402,150 it expects to receive in grants from the provincial government, while covering the additional costs from reserves to balance the books. The job cuts at the board office are to compensate for lost grants due to a decline in enrolment of 416 students, and to curb years of overspending on special education. Last year, the board spent about $ ...
