Friday, November 6, 2009 THE SELKIRK JOURNAL 21 Royals advance to KPAC semis By Brian Bowman The Selkirk Royals varsity boys volleyball team showed Springfield Collegiate that they are serious about winning a KPAC championship this season. Selkirk, currently ranked sixth in the province, easily disposed of the overmatched Springfield club, winning 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-18 in the league quarter-finals here Wednesday evening. ?We started off slow, there were lots of errors, six of the first eight points were off our errors so I wasn?t happy about that,? said Royals head coach Jim Schreyer. ?But we blocked well.? The Royals, who had strong play from setter Chad Leskiw, now advance to the league semifinals against the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes on Monday. The Buckeyes, ranked No. 3 in AAAA, had a bye into the semis. ?We looking forward to that match, other teams have been stepping it up and we?re looking to step it up also,? Schreyer said. Game time is 6 p.m. at Miles Mac. Sel ...

22 THE SELKIRK JOURNAL Friday, November 6, 2009 Rivermen rebound with OT win By Brian Bowman It may not have been the prettiest victory, but it sure was the gutsiest. The Selkirk Rivermen overcame a severely depleted lineup to edge the Lac du Bonnet Blues 5-4 in overtime last Friday in Manitoba East Hockey League action. Playing with just 11 skaters, and then losing a couple more during the course of the contest, the Rivermen made the trip back home to Selkirk an enjoyable one as Dan Shields converted a nice feed from Jason Shaw for the game winner 40 seconds into overtime. With the victory, Selkirk improved to 2-1 while Lac du Bonnet dropped to 1-0-0-1. ?It was a good win, a tough win, we were pretty short-staffed and we had some injuries and some guys out,? said Rivermen head coach Johan Arnason. Selkirk trailed 3-1 late in the second but then got a key powerplay goal from Shay McGouran with just under seven minutes left in the period. The Rivermen then got an even bigger goal from S ...

Fish filleted By Brian Bowman The Selkirk Fishermen probably didn?t think they would go the entire regular season undefeated. It would have been nice, but most likely, unrealistic. But they also would never have imagined losing by a converted touchdown to the Arborg Ice Dawgs on home ice here Sunday afternoon either. The Fishermen?s 5-0 winning streak to open the season came to a crashing halt as the Ice Dawgs exploded for three first-period goals and then added four more in the third in a shocking 7-0 rout. ?The score actually doesn?t indicate the play because for the better part of the game we had total control but we just couldn?t score goals,? warned Fishermen head coach Al Hares. ?We missed way too many opportunities early.? Shots for the game were even at 41-41 while Selkirk peppered Arborg goalie Nick Anderson with 27 shots in the first two periods. With the loss, Selkirk is suddenly tied for first place in the Keystone Junior Hockey league along with the Norway House North Star ...
